The story behind Indri-Trini

Indri-Trini was launched in 2021 by Piccadily Distilleries, based in Haryana, the foothills of the Himalayas.

The name of this whiskey is rooted in Sanskrit. “Indri” references the senses, and “Trini” means three, signifying its unique three-cask maturation process. This method is not very common in India. However, the growing attention from the global whiskey community for its balance and complexity has now made Indian distillers focus on the three-cask maturation process.

The triple cask maturation

The hallmark of Indri-Trini lies in its careful use of three types of casks during maturation.

The Ex-Bourbon Casks contribute acquainted notes of vanilla, soft oak and toffee.

Ex-French Wine Casks add structure. It also adds nuance with red fruit layers and mild tannins.

Ex-Pedro Ximenez (PX) Sherry Casks bring in richness with dried fruit. There is also brown sugar and subtle spice.

Clearly, each cask brings something unique to the table. And when they are layered thoughtfully, the result is a well-integrated whiskey. A spirit that reflects precision and maturity beyond its years.

Crafted with tradition and care

The production process behind Indri-Trini leans into heritage.

It all begins with the six-row Indian barley. It is grown in Rajasthan employing time-honoured agricultural practices. This barley is malted, then distilled in traditional copper pot stills, which are integral to producing the heavier, oilier spirit style needed to stand up to bold maturation.

The maturation of this whiskey takes place in a climate with extreme temperature swings, typical of the Himalayan region. And that is what accelerates the interaction between spirit and wood.

The whiskey is non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. Plus, it contains no added colouring. These choices help preserve the whiskey’s integrity, both in flavour and texture.

Tasting notes

1. Nose:

The initial aroma of this whiskey offers a mix of tropical sweetness. You can smell caramelised pineapple, vanilla and summer fruits, which is intertwined with black tea, honey and gentle spice. Also, a little hint of sandalwood and nutmeg reflects the Indian territory subtly.

2. Palate:

The mouthfeel is soft and rounded. Flavours like banana, mango and papaya take the lead. Caramel and vanilla support these flavours even more. Spice notes from the PX cask balance the sweetness well.

With Indri-Trini, the layers are distinct yet cohesive. And that is a sign of careful blending.

3. Finish:

The finish is medium to long with soft tannins. Also, there is a peppery warmth. This whiskey leaves behind a gentle spiced sweetness that invites a second sip without overwhelming the palate.
